Westonbirt Arboretum
The first question asked by many people is 'what is an arboretum?' The literal meaning of the word is 'tree garden' and, in the case of Westonbirt, this is extended to include shrubs as well. The arboretum's origins can be traced back to 1829, when its founder Robert Holford began an ambitious planting scheme.
The arboretum contains over 17,000 trees and plants of which many species are now rare and endangered in their native lands. Through the year there is an exciting programme of events, workshops, walks and talks.
